ORGANIC JUICE & VEGETABLE - BIOTTA III

Monday, December 7, 2009 by Sara Cox
“You do not have to adhere to a “detox” regimen to rid your body of any toxins.  Your body is equipped with your liver and kidney to rid your body of any toxins and waste.  A healthy, well balanced diet that provides adequate fiber from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables will keep waste matter moving in your GI tract and aid in its elimination from your body.”
-- Joan Salge Blake, MS, RD, LDN and Clinical Associate Professor at Boston University's Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.*
When we talk about detoxifying or cleansing your body from within, the foods you eat and the juice you drink can help to cleanse the body’s detoxification organs, including the liver, intestines, kidneys and skin, preventing harmful toxic buildup.**

Simply by making smart food choices and eating healthy foods, we can assist our bodies in removing toxins.  Here are some foods that help this process, some of which are found in Biotta 100% organic juices.
•    Apples help eliminate toxins and clean the intestines.
•    Avocados lower cholesterol, dilate blood vessels and block many known carcinogens.

•    Beets contain compounds that make them superb blood and liver cleansers.  Biotta Beet Juice is available in 8.4 and 16.9 fluid ounce recyclable glass bottles.

•    Blueberries contain natural aspirin; they lower inflammation and block bacteria in the urinary tract.

•    Cabbage contains anticancer and antioxidant compounds, cleanses the digestive tract and strengthens the liver.

•    Celery and Celery Seeds are great blood cleansers; they have many anti-cancer compounds as well.  Biotta Celery Root Juice is available in 16.9 fluid ounce recyclable glass bottles.

•    Cranberries cleanse the urinary tract since they contain antibiotic and antiviral properties.
•    Flaxseed and Flaxseed Oil contain essential fatty acids, particularly Omega-3s.
•    Garlic cleanses harmful bacteria, intestinal parasites and viruses.
•    Grapefruit has pectin fiber that cleanses the blood.
•    Kale (saurtkraut) contains powerful anti-cancer and antioxidant compounds.
•    Legumes are loaded with fiber that lowers cholesterol and cleanses the intestines.
•    Lemons are great liver detoxifiers.**

You can help ward off toxic buildups by filling your diet with these delicious fruits, vegetables, nuts, oils and beans.  And, one of the best way to get some of these nutrients is with 100% all-natural Biotta juices.

The Benefits of Elderberry Juice
Friday, December 4, 2009 by George Pappas

In my previous post, we looked at the background of the elderberry and the different types available.  Today, we’ll examine the benefits of this remarkable juice.  For example, did you know that elderberry juice was used to treat a flu epidemic in Panama in 1995?  People with the flu who drank elderberry juice had less severe symptoms and felt that they recovered much more quickly than those who did not have the juice.*
Boosting the Immune System
One of elderberry juice’s main benefits is boosting the immune system.  It actually helps block the flu and has outstanding antiviral properties.   Because elderberry juice supplies the body with antioxidant protection, it may be effective in treating a variety of diseases that are related to a compromised immune system.  In fact, preliminary studies have shown it may be effective “against some viruses, including herpes and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).”**  Because elderberry juice has been medically proven to be a strong anti-viral and immune system enhancer, it is often recommended as part of a health maintenance program.

Preventing Upper Respiratory Infections
Elderberry juice is effective in preventing and treating upper respiratory infections.  Research shows that elderberry juice reduces excessive sinus mucous, and additional studies show that elderberry improves sinus drainage and decreases congestion.**  The natural active ingredient in elderberries can help regenerate the cilia’s filtering function; that’s why it’s a natural to help relieve colds and flu (some people even drink it to help relieve symptoms of asthma).

Fight the Flu
Research has shown that elderberry is effective in fighting at least eight strains of flu virus.  “A clinical trial of elderberry found that it cured 90 percent of flu infections in three days, which was half the time needed for recovery in participants taking a placebo.”**

Lower Cholesterol
Some research suggests that elderberry reduces high cholesterol as well.  “Early study reports that elderberry juice may decrease serum cholesterol concentrations and increase low-density lipoprotein stability.”***

Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is made from freshly gathered, sun-ripened organic black elderberries and is available in an 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottle.

We’ve had quite a bit of interest about Biotta Elderberry Juice every since
Dr. Oz mentioned on a recent TV show that elderberry juice can help boost your immune system.  This post and the one to follow will give you a little more background about the elderberry—the various types and benefits—and talk about some of the scientific research being done.

The History of the Elderberry
For centuries, elderberries have been used throughout Europe, North America, Asia and
Africa as a folk remedy for many ailments.  The most common type of elderberry is the Sambucus Nigra, grown in temperate climate throughout Europe and North America.  Hippocrates called this plant the “medicine chest” because of all of the illnesses it could be used to treat.*

There are several species of the elderberry tree.  Most information you read and most of the research done has been about the Sambucus Nigra, which is the type of elderberry used in Biotta Elderberry Juice.  Other species include the America elder, antelope brush, blue elderberry, danewort, dwarf elder, red-fruited elder, and Sambucus formosana.**

The Elderberry Tree
The elderberry tree grows up to 30 feet tall.  Native to Europe, it has been cultivated successfully in the Americas as well.** The tree bears beige flowers and dark purple berries in autumn.  All the parts of the tree have been used for medicinal purposes.  The leaves are often added to topical creams to treat inflammation, and the bark has been used to treat stomach ailments.***

But the flowers and berries are most often used to treat a variety of illnesses and conditions (see the following post).***  They contain flavonoids that have antioxidants and immune-boosting properties.  In fact, elderberries contain “organic pigments, tannin, amino acids, carotenoids, flavonoids, sugar, rutin, viburnic acid, vitamin A and B, and a large amount of vitamin C.”****

Elderberry Juice
Many sources suggest drinking elderberry juice to boost your immune system and improve digestion.  Since large doses can cause digestive problems in some people, it is sometimes recommended that 10 ounces of elderberry juice be consumed daily.*

Biotta Elderberry Juice
Biotta Elderberry Juice boosts your immune system and eases the strain on the respiratory system by increasing the production and performance of white blood cells and building resistance to various kinds of infections. When a person becomes ill, he/she may suffer from blocked respiratory passages.  The natural active ingredient in elderberries can help regenerate the cilia’s filtering function; that’s why it’s a natural to help relieve colds and flu (some people even drink it to help relieve symptoms of asthma).  Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is made from freshly gathered, sun-ripened organic Sambucus Nigra (black) elderberries .  Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is available in an 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottle.

Enjoy Holiday Cheer – the Healthy Way
Wednesday, November 25, 2009 by Sara Cox

The party has started, hasn’t it?  It starts with one candy bar—or maybe two—at Halloween, slides through Thanksgiving turkey dinner, and ends with some holiday cheer at Christmas and ringing in the New Year.  You find you have indulged too much, gained weight and have failed, once again, to follow a healthy regimen.

In an October 31st article in the Hindustan Times entitled “How to stay healthy while you party,” author Veenu Singh recommends certain steps to take to ensure a healthy holiday season.
1.    Have a healthy drink.  Healthy drinks, like teas and juices, can help detoxify the body and help keep us from gaining weight by drinking other, more calorie-laden drinks.
2.    Cleanse your system.  The author recommends cleansing your system after a big social event at which you may have overindulged.  Biotta’s 100% organic juices are a great way to cleanse the body.
3.    Drink in moderation. A friend of mine brings a bottle of Biotta juice to parties to help limit her consumption of alcohol and give her something healthy to drink.
4.    Snack smart.  There is a difference between snacking on empty calories and healthier snacks, like nuts and fruits.  Opt for the healthy choices.
5.    Stock up on antioxidants.  Antioxidants help get rid of toxins and boost your immune system.  Biotta juices are rich in antioxidants.
6.    Stay active.  It is especially important to stay active through the holidays.  Get moving, doing whatever exercise you can.  Any exercise is better than none, including parking your car at the end of the parking lot and walking a little to get to the store.
7.    Balance your calories.  Biotta 100% organic juice is a great, low-calorie way to help balance your intake while getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs.
Yes, we can stay healthy during the holidays, and Biotta all-natural juices can play a big part in that.

Every day, we field questions about our Biotta juices—ingredients, potential health benefits, our proprietary manufacturing process, distribution, etc.  We thought that, if a few people are asking these questions, then perhaps many of you would be interested in the answers as well.  When you see our blog featuring The Juice, you’ll know we are answering consumer questions about our 100% organic juices that may be relevant to you.

Question: What type of tea is used in Biotta juices?

Answer: Three of our juices—Biotta Energy Drink, Breakfast Cocktail and our Elderberry Juice—contain small amounts of tea, used primarily to balance the strong or tart flavors of the fruit juices to make them more appealing.  Different teas are used for each of these juices.

Biotta Energy Drink has Paraguay Tea infusion.  Paraguay Tea comes from a “large, white-flowered shrub grows wild near streams, largely cultivated in South America for the drink obtained by infusing the leaves. The consumption in South America is vast, as it is drunk at every meal and hour.”  The tea is a diuretic and diaphoretic (an agent that produces perspiration).*

Biotta Breakfast Juice includes green tea.  Green tea originates from China and has become associated with many cultures in Asia from Japan to the Middle East.**   The Chinese have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since ancient times. “Today, scientific research in both Asia and the west is providing hard evidence for the health benefits long associated with drinking green tea. For example, in 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of an epidemiological study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent. University of Purdue researchers recently concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. There is also research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.***

Biotta Elderberry Juice contains tea extracted from the elder flower.  Elder flowers are
traditionally used to treat influenza, colds, mucus, sinusitis, feverish illnesses and other upper respiratory tract problems, as well as hay fever. ****

The Juice – Your Questions Answered
Saturday, November 21, 2009 by Sara Cox
Every day, we field questions about our Biotta juices—ingredients, potential health benefits, our manufacturing process, distribution, etc.  We thought that, if a few people are asking these questions, then perhaps many of you would be interested in the answers as well.  When you see our blog featuring The Juice, you’ll know we are answering consumer questions about our 100% organic juices that may be relevant to you.

Question: How much juice should I drink in order to get the health benefits?

Answer: In general, we recommend drinking one 8 ounce glass of our juices every day.  Biotta all-natural juice is rich in vitamins and minerals.  You can safely increase your consumption from one glass to two glasses or even more.  And, you can break up the serving into smaller glasses, if you prefer, perhaps a morning, mid-day and evening portion.

Certain medical studies may recommend varying amount of juice to gain health benefits.  For example, a recent study published by Exeter University concluded that drinking two glasses of beetroot juice per day can help people exercise for up to 16% longer.*  And, an online February 4th issue of Hypertension cited a study that showed a drop in blood pressure one hour after drinking beet juice.  The study concluded that two cups of beet juice can lower blood pressure by approximately 10 points.  Studies like these may help you determine how much of a specific juice would be beneficial for you.

Lycopene – A Colorful Carotenoid
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 by George Pappas
Lycopene is a bright red carotenoid found in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, including watermelon and papaya (not strawberries).  Studies show that lycopene-rich foods may help reduce the risk of some cancers (including prostate and breast cancer), as well as reducing the risk of macular degeneration and cardiovascular disease.*  Lycopene may also be instrumental in helping to prevent osteoporosis and reduce allergy symptoms.

Of all of the carotenoids, lycopene is the most effective when it comes to neutralizing the effects of UV rays and slowing the aging effects on the skin.  One recent study showed that the daily consumption of tomato paste was linked to a 30% increase in skin protection, as well as a boost in collagen levels.

Lycopene and Cancer Cells
When it comes to lycopene, you say tomato and I say tom-aahhh-to.  However you pronounce it, tomatoes are the best source of lycopene.  Tomato-derived lycopene may block the growth of cancer cells, in particular prostate cancer.* Wikipedia explains the correlation this way:

Because preliminary research has shown an inverse correlation between consumption of tomatoes and cancer risk, lycopene has been considered a potential agent for prevention of some types of cancers, particularly prostate cancer. However, this area of research and the relationship with prostate cancer have been deemed insufficient of evidence for health claim approval by the US Food and Drug Administration.**

Biotta Vegetable Juice Cocktail
Tomatoes and tomato-based sauces and juices account for more than 85% of the dietary intake of lycopene for most people.  A delicious way to get the lycopene you need is by drinking Biotta’s Vegetable Juice Cocktail, a well-balanced blend of several vital nutrients.  It’s made from freshly gathered organic vegetables, including tomatoes, carrots, celeriac and beetroots, finished off with lemon juice, spices and a pinch of sea salt.  Biotta’s Vegetable Juice Cocktail is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

Carotenoids – You Need Them; Biotta’s Got Them
Monday, November 16, 2009 by George Pappas
What Carotenoids Are
Carotenoids help keep you healthy and help prevent chronic illness.  The word “carotenoid” comes from the Latin word for carrots.  Carotenoids are natural pigments with colors ranging from orangey-yellow to red violet.  Your body cannot make carotenoids, so you have to obtain them from the foods you eat.  You get carotenoids from a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Beta carotene is the most widespread carotenoid in our diet (found in carrots), followed by lutein (found in spinach), and lycopene (found in tomatoes).  Together, these three sources account for almost 80% of carotenoid intake.*

Why Carotenoids Are Important
Carotenoids have positive effects on your health.  The pigments, like beta carotene and crypto xanthin, get converted into Vitamin A in your body, which is so important for good vision and for the immune system.  Most carotenoids are powerful antioxidants that protect cells from damage, which is especially important for your skin, which is an organ with large quantities of carotenoids.  Carotenoids are also believed to have cellular effects that can help prevent chronic illnesses.

Biotta Carrot Juice
Biotta’s 100% organic Carrot Juice is an excellent source of carotenoids.  After all, carrots are one of nature’s most “healing” foods—an excellent source of pro-vitamin A, vitamins C, D, E, K, B1 and B6.  Carrots are also rich in bioton, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and organic sodium.

Beta carotene is an anti-oxidant that has health benefits that may positively affect a variety of conditions and diseases, including:

•    Balancing blood acidity and blood sugar
•    Detoxifying the liver and reducing toxicity in the body
•    Reducing the risk of heart diseases and stroke by cleansing arterial deposits
•    Protecting the respiratory system from infections
•    Reducing cancer risks
•    Lowering serum cholesterol levels
•    Easing nasal congestion
•    Regulating chronic constipation problems
•    Keeping the optic system in good condition, with special protection against astigmatism, macular degeneration and cataracts
•    Reducing inflammation and easing arthritis and rheumatism
•    Building the immune system
•    Nourishing the skin and helping to prevent psoriasis and acne
•    Preventing ulcers
•    Eliminating excess fluids from the body**

For more than half a century, Biotta has been producing 100% natural, organic, fresh carrot juice to health food stores and select grocers throughout the country.  Biotta’s Carrot Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

The Other Side of Beet Juice
Friday, November 13, 2009 by George Pappas
We’ve talked many times about the amazing properties and health benefits of beet root juice.  Beet juice can help lower blood pressure, increase dietary nitrates and thereby increase stamina, aid in digestive problems, detoxify the body, build the immune system, strengthen bones, and help fight cancer by breaking up tumors.

Beet Juice Sensitivity
But, some articles have surfaced that warn about the dangers of drinking beet juice straight.  While most people do not have a problem drinking beet juice, in some people, drinking straight beet juice can cause giddiness, heartthrob, general weakness and vomiting.*

Drink Beet Juice in Combination
If you are sensitive to beet juice and can’t drink it without feeling dizzy or lightheaded, a simple solution is to try combining beet juice with other organic juices and vegetables.  In this way, your body can reap the benefits of beet juice’s healthy properties without experiencing unpleasant side effects.  Some wonderful carrot/beet combinations include:
•    Carrot, beet, ginger, garlic
•    Carrot, beet, cucumber
•    Carrot, beet, parsley, cucumber
•    Carrot, spinach, beet
•    Carrot, celery, parsley, beet
•    Carrot, beet, cucumber, parsley, garlic **
Try combining Biotta Beetroot Juice with our Carrot or Celery Root Juices for a wonderful, refreshing, healthy taste treat.

Beet Juice Can Increase Energy
Remember, for most people, drinking beet juice straight is not a problem.  In fact, recent research shows that drinking two glasses of beet juice daily gives you more energy.  The research showed how the nitrate contained in beetroot juice leads to a reduction in oxygen uptake, making exercise less tiring. The study revealed that drinking beet juice reduces oxygen uptake to an extent that cannot be achieved by any other known means, including training.***  The study, published Feb. 2008 in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension, also showed that people who drank beet juice also had a lower resting blood pressure.

Beet juice is Biotta’s most favored juice by consumers, rich with natural minerals and vitamins.  In all likelihood, you won’t have any problem drinking Biotta Beet Juice straight.  If you do, try one of the juice combinations listed above.  Beet juice is refreshing, crisp, cool and a healthy addition to your diet.  Biotta’s Beet Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

What’s in a Label?
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 by George Pappas
Do you ever get confused when you look at labels?  Juice labels, for instance, can sport many terms, including “fresh squeezed,” “from concentrate,” “100% pure,” “fresh frozen” and “not from concentrate.”  What do these labels tell you about the quality of the juice and exactly what you are buying?

The Food and Drug Administration offers these guidelines:
•    "100% Pure" or "100% Juice." This label guarantees that the product is 100 percent fruit juice, complete with all its nutrients. Only 100 percent juice can be labeled "juice."  If a bottle contains mixed juices, it can only be labeled "100 percent juice" if each of the juices added to the mixture is, itself, a 100 percent juice.**

•    "Cocktail," "Punch," "Drink," "Beverage," “Blend,” “Sparkler.”  If you see these labels, you know that the products are diluted, containing less than 100 percent juice. They often have added sweeteners. These products might contain as little as 10 percent or as much as 99 percent juice. The rest is water or added sweeteners. Check the label to find out how much juice such products contain. As with all labels, ingredients must be listed on the label in order of volume.**

•    "Fresh Squeezed Juice." This label means the juice has been squeezed from fresh fruit. It is not pasteurized and is usually located in the produce or dairy section of the grocery store. Be cautious about offering non-pasteurized juice to children, older adults or others with compromised immune systems.

•    "From Concentrate." This label tells you that water has been removed from whole juice to make concentrate; then water is added back to reconstitute to 100 percent juice or to diluted juice such as lemonade. When water is added back to the concentrate, the product is labeled "reconstituted" or "made from concentrate" and has the same nutrition profile as the original juice. "**

•    "Not From Concentrate." This juice has never been concentrated.

•    "Fresh Frozen." Juice with this label has been freshly squeezed, packaged and frozen without pasteurization or further processing. It is usually sold in plastic bottles in the frozen food section of the grocery store and is ready to drink after thawing.*

•    “Fortified.”  “Fruit juice is sometimes enhanced with nutrients intended to provide health benefits because juice is convenient, has good flavor, and is inherently associated with good health. Juices may be fortified with extra vitamins (such as vitamin C), minerals (such as calcium), cholesterol-lowering sterols, and, increasingly, omega-3 fatty acids. Such juices may be a good idea if they're fortified with nutrients you don't obtain enough of in your normal diet.”**

Biotta juices are 100% organic, not made from concentrate.  Since our company began in 1957, we’ve been committed to using only the finest organically grown fruits and vegetables.  Every fruit and vegetable we use is grown in chemical-free, fertilizer-free and toxic-free land—land that has been organically farmed for more than half a century.  All of our fruits and vegetables are vine/field-ripened and are selected using the highest standards in relation to flavor and content.

Biotta takes great care to protect the natural wholesomeness and taste of all our ingredients.  Instead of pressing the fruits and vegetables, which can cause some loss of nutritional value, we use a decanting process of centrifugation to pull the juice out.  Then, we pasteurize the juice at low heat levels to retain the high nutritional value, bottle our juices in recyclable glass bottles for full flavor retention, label and send.  No other company takes more care to deliver a 100% organic product.

Here is how Biotta’s Juices stack up:

Beet Juice
Carrot Juice
Vegetable Juice Cocktail (in this case, the 'cocktail' denotes a blend of vegetable juices)

Fighting High Cholesterol – Part 2
Monday, November 2, 2009 by Sara Cox
In my previous post, we looked at some basic tips for reducing your cholesterol level, according to an article from the Living Well Center, entitled “Cholesterol:  Fighting back with heart-healthy choices.”*

You may be wondering which Biotta juices, in particular, are likely to help in the fight against high cholesterol.

Biotta Carrot Juice is an excellent source of pro-vitamin A, vitamins C, D, E, K, B1 and B6.  Carrots are also rich in bioton, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and organic sodium.**  The benefits of drinking organic carrot juice are many.  Carotene is an anti-oxidant that has health benefits that may positively affect a variety of conditions and diseases, including:
•    Balancing blood acidity and blood sugar.
•    Detoxifying the liver and reducing toxicity in the body
•    Reducing the risk of heart diseases and stroke by cleansing arterial deposits
•    Protecting the respiratory system from infections
•    Reducing cancer risks
•    Lowering serum cholesterol levels
•    Easing nasal congestion
•    Regulating chronic constipation problems
•    Keeping the optic system in good condition, with special protection against astigmatism, macular degeneration and cataracts
•    Reducing inflammation and easing arthritis and rheumatism
•    Building the immune system
•    Nourishing the skin and helping to prevent psoriasis and acne
•    Preventing ulcers
•    Eliminating excess fluids from the body*

Tomatoes, found in Biotta Vegetable Juice Cocktail, are among the healthiest of foods, and that means tomato juice has some amazing properties.  As a good source of potassium, lycopene, niacin, vitamin B6 and folate, tomatoes can help to lower the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol.  Tomatoes can also help reduce the risk of colon cancer, decrease the frequency of migraine attacks, and help diabetics keep their blood sugar levels under control.**

Biotta Celery Root Juice may help lower cholesterol in two ways.  Laboratory studies have shown that celery contains butyl phthalide, which may reduce levels of LDL cholesterol.  In addition, celery aids in increasing bile acid secretion, and that helps to remove cholesterol from the body.***  Biotta’s Celery Root Juice is made from freshly harvested celeriac and is available in 16.9 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

Biotta Beet Juice is our most favored juice by consumers, rich with natural minerals
and vitamins.  It’s a refreshing, crisp, cool and healthy addition to your diet.  Biotta’s Beet Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.  Beet juice helps maintain cell functions and strengthens the body’s resistance to diseases. Recent studies show beet juice may help reduce blood pressure and lower cholesterol.

Fighting High Cholesterol – Part 1
Friday, October 30, 2009 by Sara Cox
Want to lower your cholesterol and reduce your chance of developing heart disease?  Here are some basic tips for reducing your cholesterol level, according to an article from the Living Well Center, entitled “Cholesterol:  Fighting back with heart-healthy choices.”*

Eat right, get plenty of exercise, and begin to understand your family health history.  Those are the starting points for a healthy diet and lifestyle, which may help reduce total cholesterol.  In general, states the article, your goals should be to have your “good” cholesterol higher than your “bad” cholesterol.*

Good Fats
Even good fats are high in calories, so you have to limit their amounts.  Steer towards monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, such as olive, canola, peanut, corn, safflower and soybean oils.

Heart-healthy Choices
Here are some heart-healthy choices to help lower your cholesterol:

1.    Switch your dairy products.  Use two percent or skim milk instead of whole milk, for example.  Use low-fat or nonfat sour cream, yogurt, cheese and ice cream.
2.    Choose lean cuts of meat, including turkey, chicken, pork tenderloin, and beef tenderloin.
3.    Cook with the “good” oils mentioned above.
4.    Use more plant-based protein, such as beans, peas, lentils, tofu and soy.
5.    Boost your intake of food high in fiber, including oatmeal, oat bran cereal, beans, peas, apples, bananas and citrus fruits.
6.    Increase whole grains in your diet.
7.    Use products that contain plant sterol or stanol esters, components that help keep your body from absorbing cholesterol.  These include margarines, orange juice and yogurt.
8.    Eat fatty fish once a week.  Pregnant and nursing women should limit their intake of tuna to 6 ounces a week because of concerns over mercury levels.
9.    Increase the amounts of fruits and vegetables you eat.  And what better way to get your fruits and vegetables than with Biotta 100% organic juices?
10.    Keep an eye on dietary cholesterol. Remember, egg yolks are filled with dietary cholesterol, whereas egg whites are cholesterol-free, as are egg substitutes.
11.    Order your foods fresh, sautéed, grilled, broiled or poached.
12.    Watch your portion sizes, and eat half of what you order out.
13.    Balance a high-fat appetizer, for instance, with a heart-healthy entrée.
14.    Limit alcohol consumption.  While wine may raise your good cholesterol a bit, there is also evidence that it can raise triglyceride levels.
15.    Choose healthier options at fast food restaurants.  Most have salads, yogurts and baked potatoes.*
Biotta 100% organic juices can be an important element in helping to lower cholesterol levels.  In my next post, we’ll look at those Biotta juices that may directly affect high serum cholesterol levels: Biotta Carrot Juice, Biotta Vegetable Juice Cocktail, Biotta Celery Root Juice, and Biotta Beet Juice.

Forty percent of our population will likely have to deal with cancer at some point.  That’s a lot of people.  Since tumors often grow more than 20 years without detection before they are diagnosed, eating and drinking foods that protect against this serious problem is an excellent idea.

Enter the lowly beet.  Beets are one of nature’s astounding wonders.  Recent studies have shown that beets increase stamina during exercise by 16 percent.*  Add that to all the other known health benefits of beet juice—including lowering blood pressure, increasing dietary nitrates, aiding in digestive problems, building the immune system and strengthening bones—and you have one powerhouse food.
But did you know that beet juice has also been shown to break up cancers and tumors?  In the 1950s, Dr. Ferenczi of Hungary used beets exclusively to break up tumors in the body.**  Tumors were often eliminated, but he found that they returned if the patient stopped eating beets and drinking beet juice.  These findings confirmed that eating beets and drinking beet juice was not just a short-term fix, but rather a lifestyle solution.

Cancer-fighting Betacyanin
Betacyanin is the ingredient that has been identified as the main tumor-fighting agent in beets.  Betacyanin gives beets its bright reddish purple color, and it also helps to detoxify the body, in general.

Beets' potential effectiveness against colon cancer, in particular, has been demonstrated in
several studies. In one study, animals with chemically induced colon cancer and high cholesterol were divided into two groups. “One group received a diet high in beet fiber while the other group served as a control. The beet fiber-fed animals rose to the challenge by increasing their activity of two antioxidant enzymes in the liver, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase. The liver is the body's primary detoxification organ where toxic substances are broken down and eliminated, a process that generates a lot of free radicals. Glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase are the bodyguards for liver cells, protecting them from free radical attack, so they can continue to protect us.”***
“In other animal studies, scientists have noted that animals fed beet fiber had an increase in their number of colonic CD8 cells, special immune cells responsible for detecting and eliminating abnormal cells. With the increased surveillance provided by these additional CD8 cells, the animals in one of the studies given beet fiber had fewer pre-cancerous changes.  In stomach cancer patients, when scientists compared the effects of fruit and vegetable juices on the formation of nitrosamines, ...beet juice was found to be a potent inhibitor of the cell mutations caused by these (cancer-causing) compounds.”***
Add beet juice to your diet and increase your body’s tumor-fighting capability.  Beet juice is Biotta’s most favored juice by consumers, rich with natural minerals and vitamins.  It’s a refreshing, crisp, cool and healthy addition to your diet.  Biotta’s Beet Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

Elderberry Juice and Your Immune System – as seen on Dr. Oz
Friday, October 23, 2009 by Sara Cox
Last week, Dr. Oz did a feature on his daily TV show (NBC) about ways to boost your immune system, with the cold and flu season knocking at our doors.  He explained that we need white blood cells and antibodies to build our immune system and win the fight against invading bacteria and germs.

What foods did he recommend to build the immune system?  Building “Super Immunity,” as Dr. Oz called it, is easy when you include these foods in your diet.  Some of them may surprise you.
1.    Sardines: an important source of antibodies for the immune system.

2.    Papaya Carrot juice: the carrots are high in beta-carotene, which builds white blood cells and makes your immune system more aggressive.

3.    Miso Soup: boosts antibodies in your bloodstream.

4.    Elderberry juice: Dr. Oz explained that elderberry juice actually helps block the flu and has antiviral properties that are outstanding.   European and American cultures have long used elderberry juice to boost the immune system and help relieve colds and flu.  Because elderberry juice has been medically proven to be a strong anti-viral and immune system enhancer, it is often recommended as part of a health maintenance program.
5.    Garlic

Biotta Elderberry Juice Answers the Call
With the severity of these new strains of the flu this season, why not take Dr. Oz’s suggestion and try Elderberry Juice?  Biotta Elderberry Juice is delicious—and good for you!  It boosts your immune system and eases the strain on the respiratory system.  Elderberry juice does wonders for boosting the immune system by increasing the production and performance of white blood cells and building resistant to various kinds of infections.* When a person does become ill, they may suffer from blocked respiratory passages.  The natural active ingredient in elderberries can help regenerate the cilia’s filtering function; that’s why it’s a natural to help relieve colds and flu (some people even drink it to help relieve symptoms of asthma).

Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is made from freshly gathered, sun-ripened organic elderberries.
Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is available in an 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottle.

Nitric Oxide and Blood Pressure
Tuesday, October 20, 2009 by George Pappas

What is nitric oxide, and how can it help lower your blood pressure?  The juice of dark leafy vegetables and dark red vegetables (such as beets) all produce nitric oxide.  These vegetables are high in nitrates, and dietary nitrates help to increase the amount of nitric oxide in the body.  When you drink beet juice, the nitrates are turned into nitrites and, in your stomach, nitrites turn into nitric oxide.
Why is nitric oxide important?
Nitric oxide enters your bloodstream as nitrites and lowers blood pressure in as little as three hours by relaxing blood vessels.*  A scientific journal paper entitled “Acute blood pressure lowering, vasoprotective and anti-platelet properties of dietary nitrate via bioconversion to nitrite” was published in the February 2008 edition of Hypertension.*  It explained that, if your blood vessels cannot expand or contract to handle differences in blood flow, nitric oxide may be helpful.  And if you have thick blood that clots too easily, beet juice, in particular, may have anti-clotting properties.

Drink Beet Juice to Lower Blood Pressure
The article stated that drinking two cups of beet juice daily may protect against endothelial dysfunction—that’s when blood vessels cannot expand and contract normally.  A study in Hypertension (online February 4, 2008) explained that two cups of beet juice can lower blood pressure by 10 points and last up to 24 hours, which is more effective than many prescription drugs.*

Other Beet Juice Benefits
Beet Juice is Biotta’s most popular juice—and no wonder.  Our beet juice is 100% organic, made from the highest quality beet roots.  Biotta’s Beet Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

Beet juice, rich in minerals and vitamins, helps maintain cell functions and strengthens the body’s resistance to diseases.  Studies show beet juice may help boost your immune system.

A recent study published by Exeter University also concluded that drinking two glasses of beetroot juice per day can increase stamina up to 16%.**  Many other sources indicate that beet juice may be therapeutic for sexual weakness, kidney stones, gall bladder, kidney, liver and prostate troubles.***  Beet juice contains chlorine, a mineral that acts to regulate digestion by controlling the rhythmical contraction of the abdomen, *** and calcium, important to maintaining bone health.****

Drinking Your Fruits and Vegetables Aids Absorption
Sunday, October 18, 2009 by George Pappas
It’s important to get the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables every day to give your body the nutrients it needs to function well.  Drinking all-natural fruit and vegetable juices—like 100% organic Biotta juices—is a great way to consume the good foods your body needs.

If Vegetables Don’t Make Your Heart Sing …
Remember your mom telling you to eat your vegetables because people were starving in 3rd world countries?  Sometimes it’s still hard to get all the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables in every day.  That’s where fresh juices comes in!

According to an article entitled “Juice Appeal lets you eat your vegetables with a straw,” author Rasham Nassar states:
“Fortunately, with recent innovations in health and diet, consuming the daily recommended dose of fruits and vegetables doesn’t need to be a bittersweet trip down memory lane. It can be fun, trendy, and extremely affordable, thanks to the increasing awareness of the benefits of juicing!”*

Get the Juice Advantage
Ok—drinking juice can be more convenient, but are there other benefits as well?  You bet!  The benefits of drinking juice are numerous, but one of the most important is absorption of nutrients by the body.  The “Juice Appeal” article goes on to state, “Our body’s natural ability to absorb nutrients from the foods we eat has deteriorated thanks to our poor diets and lack of exercise.  When we blend our fruits and vegetables, we are, in a sense, bypassing the processing of digestion, going straight from sippy cup to bloodstream, therefore eliminating the risk of a possible loss of valuable vitamins and minerals in our diets.”*

Another advantage of drinking your fruits and vegetables is that you end up consuming more—and different—types of vegetables than you would if you were eating them.  For example, our Vegetable Juice Cocktail includes carrot juice, celery juice, beetroot juice, tomato juice, and various seasonings and spices.

Celery juice—its benefits are almost limitless.  According to http://www.naturalnews.com/024596_celery_blood_salt.html, celery juice is highly nutritious and one of the most hydrating foods we can put in our bodies. Because it is incredibly alkalizing, it equalizes the body's PH, which is vital for peak health. In ancient times, it was considered a medicinal herb used to treat a variety of health complaints. The minerals and vitamins and nutrients are in perfect harmony with each other.”* Celery is high in vitamin A, vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C, potassium, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, sodium and essential amino acids.

Goherbalremedies.com calls celery the “most efficient medicinal plants, loaded with medicinal properties.”** Last week, we talked about its potential benefits for kidney stones and gall bladder problems, nerves, heart and muscle function, appetite suppression, migraines, rheumatism and dry skin.  Here are some additional benefits of drinking celery juice regularly:.
Fights Cancer
Celery juice may help the body fight cancer, as it is known to contain at least eight families of anti-cancer compounds.*  Rutgers University in New Jersey conducted a study that found that celery contains compounds—called acetylenics—that help prevent cancer cells from spreading.  The study also found that celery contains phonolic acids; these compounds block the action of prostaglandins, which encourage tumors to grow.*

Lowers Cholesterol
Celery juice may help lower cholesterol in two ways.  Laboratory studies have shown that a chemical contained in celery—butyl phthalide—may reduce levels of LDL cholesterol.  In addition, celery aids in increasing bile acid secretion, and that helps to remove cholesterol from the body.*

Digestion
Celery contains special nutrients in the fiber that are released during the juicing process.  These nutrients aid bowel movements, making celery juice a natural laxative to help relieve constipation.*

Anti-inflammation
According to a study published in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Science U.S.A., celery contains a phytonutrient called luteolin, which “prevents activation of a pathway that allows inflammation in the brain to get switched on.  Luteolin also inhibits the excess production of TNF-alpha, a direct cause of inflammation.  Juice is the most efficient and nutritious way to eat celery, and people who have these conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, asthma and bronchitis) can drink as much juice as desired without overdosing.”* (Italics mine)

Lowers Blood Pressure
Even though I mentioned this last week, I am bringing it up again because studies have shown that drinking celery juice daily for one week can significantly help lower blood pressure.*  It’s because of a compound called phtalides, which relaxes the muscles around the arteries, allowing blood to flow smoothly.

Urinary Tract and Gall Bladder Stones
Because celery juice is such a great eliminator of toxins from the body, it is believed to help break and eliminate urinary and gall bladder stones.  It also helps people who drink celery juice regularly avoid recurring stones.

Increased Sexuality
Got your attention with this one, did I?  Celery juice balances the system and is beneficial for weak sexuality.*  Yet, it doesn’t cause uncontrollable urges, as some pharmaceutical drugs can.

I’ve written before about the wonders of celery juice, but there are just so many benefits, it seemed like a good topic to revisit.

According to
www.goherbalremedies.com, celery is one of the “most efficient medicinal plants, loaded with medicinal properties.  It has many incredible powers to cure health problems.  Almost all parts of celery are used as medicinal herbal remedy; stems, leaves and bulbous roots.”*
Kidney Stones and Gall Bladder
Celery juice can help rid the body of toxins and stimulate kidney function.  Since the recommended amount of celery juice helps remove accumulated fluids, it aids with kidney and gall bladder function.*

Nerves
Celery is believed to have a soothing effect on nerves because of its high calcium content.*

Heart, Kidney and Muscle Function
Celery is an excellent source of potassium, which helps kidneys function normally.  It’s also important for proper heart function and “plays a key role in skeletal and muscle contraction, making it important for normal digestion and muscular function, too.  A heart-healthy diet includes potassium from fruits, vegetables, and legumes.”**  Most Americans get less than 50 percent of the suggested 4,700 milligrams of potassium per day.

Appetite Neutralizer
Trying to lose weight?  Try celery juice treated with a hint of honey.  GoHerbalRemedies.com suggests it not only tastes good, but is effective in weight reducing.*

Lower Your Blood Pressure with Celery Juice
Celery juice is getting more and more attention these days, as it is loaded with potassium and magnesium.  It also contains 3-n-butyl-phthalide, a compound that relaxes muscle cells in the artery walls and effectively lowers blood pressure.***

Celery Juice and Migraines
Celery juice is recommended both as a preventive treatment and as a treatment during the acute migraine episode.  altMD, a website for alternative medicine techniques, states that one of the preventive actions people can take to prevent migraines is to consume celery juice twice daily.**** Celery juice should be considered by anyone who suffers from migraine headaches, both as a preventive measure and a cure during acute attacks.

Rheumatism
Celery juice is believed to help alleviate the symptoms of rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica and gout pain.*

Dry Skin
Because of celery juice’s high potassium content, it is a good herbal cure for dry and dehydrated skin.*

Other Wonders of Celery Juice
The benefits of celery root juice are almost hard to overstate.  Celery is high in magnesium, potassium, iron and chlorophyll, and is one of the richest sources of organic sodium.  Its potential benefits extend to a variety of ailments, including asthma, constipation, fever, fluid retention, inflammation and insomnia.  In fact, many people have found honey-treated celery juice to help induce a sound night’s sleep.*

Did you know that approximately 12 million Americans have food allergies?  That’s one person in every 25.  And children don’t even fare that well—one in 17 children under age three has a food allergy.**
What is a Food Allergy?
A food allergy is an immune system response to a food that the body mistakenly believes is harmful.  When you have a food allergy and you eat the offending food, the body may react by releasing chemicals, including histamine, resulting in an allergic reaction. Symptoms can range from mild (rashes, hives, itching, swelling, etc.) to severe (trouble breathing, wheezing, loss of consciousness, etc.). Symptoms typically appear within minutes to two hours after the person has eaten the food to which he or she is allergic.  A food allergy can be life-threatening.

Allergies can occur to any food.  However, there are eight foods that account for 90% of all food-allergic reactions. These are milk, egg, peanut, tree nut (walnut, cashew, etc.), fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat.**

Food Allergy or Food Intolerance?
Many people mistake the two.  The difference is this: a food intolerance doesn’t involve the immune system, and it is not life-threatening.  A food allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to a certain food; it can be life-threatening.**

Biotta Juices are Allergen-Free
In regards to the eight most common food allergies listed above, all Biotta juices (with the exception of our Breakfast Drink) are 100% allergen-free.  That means that, even if you suffer from a serious food allergy to the top 8 food allergens, you can rest assured that drinking all-natural Biotta juices will not trigger an allergic reaction.  Not only are our 100% organic juices good for you, they are completely safe for people with mild or severe food allergies.

Be Kind to Your Heart – with Biotta Juices

Heart disease is THE NUMBER ONE killer of people in the United States.  Estimates for the year 2006 reflected that 80,000,000 people in the United States had one or more forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including:

•    High blood pressure — 73,600,000
•    Coronary heart disease — 16,800,000
•    Myocardial infarction (acute heart attack) — 7,900,000
•    Angina pectoris (chest pain or discomfort caused by reduced blood supply to the heart muscle) — 9,800,000
•    Stroke — 6,500,000
•    Heart Failure — 5,700,000*

Heart disease is also linked to emotional well-being, so a strong heart can help alleviate depression and stress, as well.

Drink Biotta Juices for a Healthier Heart
Certain juices are believed to be extremely heart-healthy.  If you have heart disease or if you want to avoid getting heart disease, making these juices part of your healthy regimen is a great idea.

Beet Juice
In addition to beet juice’s many other benefits, it also lowers blood pressure.  An online February 4, 2009  issue of Hypertension cited a study that showed a drop in blood pressure one hour after drinking beet juice.  The study concluded that two cups of beet juice can lower blood pressure by approximately 10 points.  Beet juice also increases the amount of nitric oxide in the body.  That, in turn, helps blood vessels relax, lowers blood pressure and has anti-inflammatory benefits as well.**

An August 2009 published study by Exeter University concluded that drinking two glasses of beetroot juice per day can help people exercise for up to 16% longer.  The nitrates in beets reduce the oxygen demand when exercising.  The double-blind study focused on men ages 19-38.  They were given 500 ml of organic beetroot juice for six consecutive days before completing a series of exercise tests.  The men who drank the beetroot juice were able to cycle longer than the men given the placebo – blackcurrant cordial.  The group drinking the beetroot juice also had lower resting blood pressure rates.***

Celery Juice
Celery juice helps kidneys function better and is also recommended both as a preventive treatment and as a treatment during the acute migraine episode.  Celery juice is getting more and more attention these days, as it is loaded with potassium and magnesium.  It also contains 3-n-butyl-phthalide, a compound that relaxes muscle cells in the artery walls and effectively lowers blood pressure.**** Many people find the benefits of celery root juice extend to a variety of other illnesses, including asthma, constipation, fever, fluid retention, headache, inflammation, insomnia, nervous problems and weight loss.  Celery juice provides a significant source of potassium, which is great for a hydrated and healthy skin.

Carrot Juice
Carrot juice—it’s full of benefits for you.  High in vitamin and magnesium content, it can be used in all sorts of eye diseases and also as a stress reliever.*****  Carrot juice can lower blood sugar, reduce the risk of heart diseases and stroke, lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation and enhance eyesight.

Vegetable Juice
Biotta’s Vegetable Juice Cocktail is a well-balanced blend of several vital nutrients.  It’s made from freshly gathered organic vegetables, including tomatoes, carrots, celeriac and beetroots, finished off with lemon juice, spices and a pinch of sea salt.  It’s delicious and good for you, too.

We’ve all seen the food pyramid, detailing how many servings of each food group a person needs to consume in one day.  Now, even the food pyramid is changing!  In April 2005, the USDA released the MyPyramid food guidance system. Along with the new MyPyramid symbol, the system provides many options to help Americans make healthy food choices and to be active every day.

The Dietary Guidelines give science-based advice on food and physical activity choices for health. The guidelines define a healthy diet as one that:
  • Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products;
  • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; and
  • Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.*

You can use these guidelines to make smart food choices, find a good balance between food and physical activity, get the most nutrition out of the calories you consume, and stay within your daily calorie needs.

MyPyramid Plan
The site will help you customize your eating plan, taking into account such things as age, sex, height, weight and amount of physical activity.  Once your plan is customized, you can read further to find out more information regarding each of the food groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, meat and beans, and oils.*

Fruits and Vegetables
http://www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/vegetables.html and http://www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/fruits.html are sub-tier pages of the site that spell out what is included in the fruit and vegetable groups, the average recommended daily amount for each group, and what constitutes a healthy serving.  The site is easy to navigate and chockfull of worthwhile information.

Biotta – A Great Way to “Eat” Your Fruits and Vegetables

Did you know there is evidence of arthritis in dinosaur bones?  It’s true, and the first known traces of human arthritis date back as far as 4500 BC.  Let’s look briefly at what arthritis is, how it can affect a person, what the normal treatments are, and how alternative therapies, such as juice therapy, may provide some relief to arthritis sufferers.

What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is actually the name given to a group of conditions involving damage to the joints of the body.  There are over 100 different forms of arthritis; the most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.* All forms of arthritis cause pain.  Different types of arthritis cause different symptoms, have varying progression timelines and aggravating factors.*  Blood tests and X-rays of the affected joints often are performed to make a specific diagnosis.

How Do You Treat Arthritis?
Treatment can vary depending on the type of arthritis and the level of symptoms.  But, treatments generally include physical therapy, lifestyle changes, medications, dietary supplements and sometimes bracing and surgery.*  In general, the more the affected joint keeps moving, the better long-term pain relief is achieved.

Juice Therapy for Arthritis
It’s important to keep your joints intact and healthy.  One of the ways people are finding helpful with arthritis pain is juice therapy.

Potato juice has been used in folk medicine for centuries.**  Potatoes contain 15 different minerals and essential amino acids.  Many people also use potato juice to relieve arthritis pain, migraines, constipation, and some skin problems, such as eczema, dry skin and blemishes.  In addition, potatoes contain high quantities of starch that work with these minerals to help neutralize stomach acid.  It’s also believed to be good for cardiovascular health , ulcers, acidosis and gout.  Potatoes have anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties, and contain the phytonutrient kukoamine, which helps to lower blood pressure.***  Biotta’s Potato Juice is available in 16.9 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.  Biotta Potato Juice contains fennel juice, giving this product a pleasant flavor and enhancing its effect.

Celery juice, beet root juice and carrot juice are also known to help reduce inflammation and may be useful in the alleviation of arthritic symptoms.  In an article entitled “Best Herbal Remedies for Arthritis” by Jessica Smith, the author suggests, “Take a cup of fresh raw juice, extracted from any green leafy vegetable and mix it with carrot, celery or beet root juices.  The alkaline properties of raw juices remove the deposits around the joints and other tissues.”**

Drink Biotta Organic Juices – To Your Health
I’m including the healthy attributes of Biotta’s Potato Juice, Carrot Juice, Beet Root Juice and Celery Juice.  Our all-organic growing and harvesting method, along with our proprietary production method, ensure you are getting the healthiest, freshest, all-natural juices available today.  Make Biotta juices part of your healthy eating program.

I wrote the other day about beating the flu by boosting your immune system.  Flu can be serious.  In the US, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized each year with the flu and 36,000 die!* With flu season fast approaching, it’s a great idea to follow these preventive measures to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy.

Our Top 10 List to Avoid the Flu:
10.   Get a flu shot.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a yearly flu shot as an important step in protecting against seasonal influenza.

9.   Avoid close contact.  Keep your distance from people who are sick.  And, when you are not feeling well, stay away from others to protect them as well.

8.   Wash your hands often with soap and water.  If you can’t wash with soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

7.   Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.  Germs are spread this way, as a person touches something that is contaminated with bacteria and then touches his/her eyes, nose or mouth.

6.   Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

5.   Stay home when you are sick.  Stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.  If you are coming down with the flu, you can infect others one day before symptoms begin and 5-7 days after becoming sick.

Good Nutrition and a Healthy Immune System
There’s no time like flu season to boost your immune system!  The strength of your immune system can make the difference as to whether or not you get sick when exposed to harmful viruses.  So, let’s look at what the immune system is and how you can boost yours in time for the cold and flu season.

What is the Immune System?
WebMD gives this explanation:
In simplest terms, the immune system is a balanced network of cells and organs that work together to defend you against disease. It blocks foreign proteins from getting into your body. If a few happen to sneak by your biological sentry, not to worry. With a powerful "search and destroy" task force, your body deploys a host of additional immune cell forces designed to hunt down these unwanted invaders and ultimately works to destroy them.*

The good news is that you can make a difference and strengthen your immune system through healthy habits and good nutrition.  You can bolster your body’s innate ability to manufacture antibodies that will counter harmful viruses and bacteria with which you come in contact.

Give Your Immune System a Boost – with Biotta
One of the easiest and most effective ways to boost your immune system is with a healthful, balanced diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables.  Biotta juices are an all-natural way to get the recommended number of fruit and vegetable servings.  In addition, certain juices are specifically believed to boost the immune system.

Biotta Beet Juice
Beet juice is fresh, crisp, smooth and refreshing—and great for you!  Beetroot juice contains betacyans, which strengthen the immune system.  Beet juice is Biotta’s most popular juice, rich with natural minerals and vitamins.  Many articles have been written about the benefits of beet juice, including some recent studies that have found that beet juice may reduce blood pressure. Beet juice also helps maintain cell functions and strengthens your body’s own natural resistance to disease.

Biotta Elderberry Juice

A recent study, cited in a PRWeb® press release** noted that some Americans, particularly young adults, are more prone to illness during the change of seasons.  In addition to other measures, the article cited the benefits of elderberries in boosting immunity.  Elderberries have twice the amount of antioxidants as blueberries and cranberries.  Elderberry juice also supplies vitamin C to assist in the prevention and treatment of colds; it’s been medically proven as a strong anti-viral and immune system enhancer.  Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is made from freshly gathered, sun-ripened organic elderberries and is available in an 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottle.

Biotta Carrot Juice
The benefits of drinking organic carrot juice are many.  Carotene is an anti-oxidant that has health benefits that may positively affect a variety of conditions and diseases, including building the immune system.  Carrot juice is also believed to balance blood acidity and blood sugar, detoxify the liver and reduce toxicity in the body, reduce the risk of heart diseases and stroke by cleansing arterial deposits, protect the respiratory system from infections, ease nasal congestion, lower cholesterol levels, and much more. Biotta’s Carrot Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles. **

Don’t Forget
There are many other things that you can do to boost your immune system as flu season approaches.***
1.    Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
2.    Choose lean protein sources.
3.    Focus on healthful fats.
4.    Consume green tea, a rich source of antioxidants.
5.    Maintain a proper energy balance.
6.    Get plenty of rest.
7.    Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly.
8.    Take a multivitamin supplement.
9.    Consume friendly bacteria, including yogurt that stimulates immunity in the digestive tract.
10.    Exercise.

As cold and flu season approaches, follow these guidelines to help boost your immune system,.  And don’t forget to make Biotta juices an important part of that regimen.

Hungry Girl Recommends Biotta Premium Organic Juices
Sunday, September 20, 2009 by George Pappas
Check us out on Hungry Girl's website - www.hungry-girl.com!  It’s a great website, chockfull of nutritional information, recipes and news.  Hungry Girl makes sure her readers understand that she is not a nutritionist, she’s just hungry!

Hungry Girl says she considers herself “…a foodologist…not because I have some kind of fancy degree, but because I am obsessed with food, how wonderful it is, and how much of it will make it impossible for me to fit into my pants. Food is my passion and it has been my lifelong obsession.  Because I obsess over food, I learn about it, read about it, research it, dream about it. Nothing gives me a thrill like discovering a new low cal snack or assembling a no fat pizza! Over the years my food obsession has caused me to accumulate approximately a zillion diet and food tips, and because I am not only hungry, but also very nice, I want to share them with you.”

Hungry Girl and Biotta
On 8/24/09, Hungry Girl included a post about Biotta’s Premium Organic Juices.  In part, this is what she had to say:

Did you know that celery is actually a member of the carrot family?  It was first recorded as a plant in France in the year 1623.  Celery is an excellent source of potassium and sodium—two minerals your body needs.*

Potassium Does a Body Good
What is potassium and why do we need it?  Potassium helps kidneys function normally.

During a migraine episode, many people have found celery juice to be effective as a cure.  MotherNature.com states “Celery juice is rich in coumarins, substances that have a soothing effect on the vascular system and that may benefit those prone to migraines, says naturopathic physician Michael Murray, N.D., author of The Complete Book of Juicing.  Fresh celery juice may be drunk alone or combined with other vegetable juices, such as carrot, cucumber, parsley and spinach. Dr. Murray says to drink an eight-ounce glass of the juice twice a day as a preventive, in conjunction with proper medical treatment.”*****

Other Celery Juice Benefits
The benefits of celery root juice are almost hard to overstate.  Celery is high in magnesium, potassium, iron and chlorophyll, and is one of the richest sources of organic sodium.  Celery juice can help rid the body of toxins and stimulate kidney function.  Its potential benefits extend to a variety of ailments, including asthma, constipation, fever, fluid retention, inflammation and insomnia.

Celery juice is also believed to cleanse the body of carbon dioxide, cool you down in the hot weather, curb the craving for sweets, and help eliminate muscle cramps and fatigue during workouts.******

If you are committed to a vegetarian or a vegan lifestyle and diet, Biotta can play an important part in helping you obtain the nutrients you need.  All of our 100% organic juices are vegan, with the exception of our Breakfast Juice, which is vegetarian.

For those of you who are not familiar with Vegan or Vegetarian diets - what’s the difference?  Well, in summary, neither vegans nor vegetarians eat meat, fish, or poultry.  Vegans, in addition to this, “do not eat or use other animal by-products such as eggs, dairy, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics and soaps derived from animal products.”*

The Vegan Diet
The key to a sound diet for both vegetarians and vegans is variety, making sure they consume the needed amounts of protein, fat, vitamins and minerals.  A diet rich in fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grain products, nuts, seeds and legumes, is critical to good health and nutrition.

Biotta Fits Right In
Biotta’s all-natural juices not only fit into vegan and vegetarian diets, they are an easy way to supply your body with many of the nutrients it needs.  On our website, www.biottajuices.com, you’ll not only find a listing of all our products, but detailed product and nutritional information that tells you if the product is vegan, dairy-free, lactose-free, wheat-free, gluten-free and much more.

Not only do our products fit the vegetarian and vegan lifestyles, our philosophic foundation does as well.  We’re committed to all-natural farming and to delivering 100% organic juices to our customers.  Every fruit and vegetable we use is grown in land that has been organically farmed for half a century—no chemicals, no fertilizer, no toxins.  Biotta juices are natural original juices; they are not made from concentrate, and no artificial additives are used.  You can’t buy a fresher, more nutritious, purely organic juice than Biotta.

In its September issue, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition will publish a paper entitled “Nutritional quality of organic foods: a systematic review.”  The article was written by a team at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and was funded by the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA).
While the article showed that, in several instances, organic foods are more nutrient dense than conventional foods, it downplayed other positive findings in favor of organic foods.

The Organic Center authored a response to the FSA study, written by Charles Benbrook, Ph.D., Chief Scientist of the Organic Center; Donald Davis, Ph.D., Retired Research Scientist, University of Texas at Austin; and Preston Andrews, Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and Washington State University.  The complete response can be read at
www.organic-center.org/science.nutri.php?action=view&report_id=157.
Basically the article states that, even though the London team reported finding “statistically significant differences between organically and conventionally grown crops in three of thirteen categories of nutrients,” the team concluded that there are “no nutritional differences between organically and conventionally grown crops.”

The Organic Center (TOC) team carried out a similar, but more rigorous review of the literature, and the results differed significantly from the more narrow FSA study.  Unlike the London study, states the article, The Organic Center's review compared apples with apples – focusing on “nutrient differences in matched pairs of crops grown on nearby farms, on the same type of soil, with the same irrigation systems and harvest timing.”

The TOC team’s findings included levels of phenolic acid higher in organic crops in 18 out of 25 cases, and higher levels of antioxidant capacity in seven of eight matched pairs.  “Across all the valid matched pairs and the 11 nutrients included in the TOC study, nutrient levels in organic food averaged 25% higher than in conventional food.”

Biotta has long been dedicated to all-natural farming and delivering 100% organic juices to our customers.  Our company started in Switzerland in 1957, and we’ve been producing top-quality fruit and vegetable juices ever since.

Take a look at this entire article and draw your own conclusions.  We believe that fully informed consumers will know that all-organic products taste better and are better for them.

The Benefits of Beet Juice Are Still Unfolding
Sunday, September 6, 2009 by George Pappas
The litany of benefits associated with beet juice seems to be expanding all the time.

Here are a few of the benefits highlighted in recent articles:
  1. Provides energy boost.  A recent study published by Exeter University concluded that drinking two glasses of beetroot juice per day can help people exercise for up to 16% longer.*
  2.
  3. Lowers blood pressure.  An online February 4th issue of Hypertension cited a study that showed a drop in blood pressure one hour after drinking beet juice.  The study concluded that two cups of beet juice can lower blood pressure by approximately 10 points.

  1. Increases dietary nitrates – Beet juice increases the amount of nitric oxide in the body.  That, in turn, helps blood vessels relax, lowers blood pressure and has anti-inflammatory benefits as well.**

  1. May assist in helping other illnesses and healthcare issues – Many other sources indicate that beet juice may be therapeutic for sexual weakness, kidney stones, gall bladder, kidney, liver and prostate troubles.***

  1. Aids in digestion problems – Beet juice contains chlorine, a mineral acts to regulate digestion by controlling the rhythmical contraction of the abdomen.***
  2. Builds immune system – Beet juice is also believed to help maintain cell function and strengthen your body’s own natural resistance to disease.
  3. Helps build strong bones – Beet juice contains calcium, important to maintaining bone health.****

Get a Boost with Biotta Beet Juice
Monday, August 31, 2009 by George Pappas
Want to boost your energy?  A recent study showed that beet juice can do it!  An August 2009 published study by Exeter University* concluded that drinking two glasses of beetroot juice per day can help people exercise for up to 16% longer.**

The group drinking the beetroot juice also had lower resting blood pressure rates.**

Fox News recently did a segment on healthy eating that featured this study and the effects of drinking beetroot juice daily.  News contributor Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld spoke directly about this study and the benefits of this amazing juice.

The benefits of beetroot juice are especially important to athletes and the elderly—people needing more energy.

How Does It Work?
The study didn’t determine exactly how the nitrates in beetroot juice boost stamina.  It is possible that the nitrate turns into nitric oxide in the body, and that reduces the oxygen burned up in exercise.

Professor Andrew Jones, one of the study’s researchers, believes that athletes will be particularly interested in these results since these effects cannot be obtained in any other known way.**  In addition, he is anxious to explore the ways in which these findings can help people who are not fit.  People who are not fit, says Jones, “may be able to use dietary supplements to help them go about their daily lives.”**

Last week, I wrote about the benefits of a gluten- and casein-free diet as it pertains to a number of illnesses, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome.  This diet has also been found to be beneficial for many people suffering from any of a number of autistic spectrum disorders, including autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, atypical autism and pervasive developmental disorder.* Biotta’s all-natural juices fit perfectly in this diet plan since all of our juices (with the exception of our Breakfast Drink) are completely gluten- and casein-free.**

Eliminating gluten and casein from your diet is recommended by many physicians for neurodevelopmental disorders as well as a number of chronic illnesses.  Gluten is mainly found in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats.  The main sources of casein are milk, cheese, yogurt, cream, butter and ice cream.

Proponents of a gluten-and casein-free diet for children with autism explain that many autistic children have gastrointestinal problems that make it difficult to digest milk and milk protein.  Milk protein leads to high levels of casomorphines and these can affect behavior as a drug would—perhaps reducing the desire for social interaction and increasing confusion.***
Is the Diet Effective in Treating Autism?
Currently, no double-blind studies have been conducted about the efficacy of this diet in treating autism.  However, several open studies in the US and Europe provide positive data in this regard.*

For example, one study was entitled “A Randomized, Controlled Study of Dietary Intervention in Autistic Syndromes” and was featured in a 2002 issue of Nutritional Neuroscience, an international journal on Nutrition, Diet and Nervous System.  It showed that when autistic children with abnormally high protein by-products in their urine were fed a gluten- and casein-free diet for 12 months, the group had significantly fewer autistic symptoms than the remaining children, who were not fed this diet.***

While the results are not conclusive, many studies concerning the gluten- and casein-free elimination diet are encouraging.  The current belief is that there is evidence that this diet can significantly help some children with autism.

Biotta’s Organic Juices Fit Right In
If you are interested in implementing a gluten- and casein-free diet, Biotta Juices can be a permanent part of the solution.  They can help you get the nutrition (vitamins and minerals) you need to enjoy a balanced, healthy diet.  Want more information about Biotta juices?  If you’re a consumer and want to know where to find our juices, click on the beet juice icon on the right.  If you’re a retailer that already carries our juices, click the carrot juice icon to be included in our retailer directory.  If you have any other questions, just email us.

The TV reality show, The Hills, follows the personal lives of several young people living in Los Angeles, California.  The program first premiered on May 31, 2006.  One of its stars, Audrina Patridge, recently brought Biotta juices national attention when she mentioned them in an issue of OK! Magazine.
In an article in the June 1st issue, entitled How to Live like The Hills’ Hotties, OK! Magazine asked some of The Hills’ cast members what some of their favorite health and beauty products are.  In a section called Audrina’s Sip, the L.A. native said she stays slim by drinking Biotta organic juices.

You’ll be hearing more from Audrina Patridge in the future, as she confirmed on May 28th "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" that she will be departing from The Hills to star in her own reality-based program documenting her life outside of The Hills. Audrina will leave the show as soon as she's done filming 10 bonus episodes of the fifth season. Her new show is tentatively titled The Audrina Show and is set to air on MTV also.

Biotta’s first national exposure came in April, when Whoopi Goldberg mentioned Biotta’s all-natural juices on The View.  Be on the lookout in your favorite magazine for more information on Biotta natural organic juices.

Biotta Juices are Gluten- and Casein-Free*
Monday, August 24, 2009 by George Pappas
There is a lot of interest today in gluten-free and casein-free diets, which eliminate these naturally occurring proteins.  Gluten is mainly found in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats.  The main sources of casein are milk, cheese, yogurt, cream, butter and ice cream..  The gluten-free, casein-free diet has become one of the most popular diets for a host of conditions, including autism and irritable bowel syndrome.**  Biotta juices fit perfectly in this diet plan since all of our juices (with the exception of our Breakfast Drink) are completely gluten- and casein-free.
The Gluten-free, Casein-free Diet
Why and when is this diet recommended?  “Alternative healthcare practitioners often recommend the gluten-free, casein-free diet to patients, as do a relatively small number of medical doctors who specialize in the treatment of particular conditions. ”**

Eliminating casein from your diet may seem like a daunting task, since milk and its by-products are in so many processed foods.  But, there are a number of great alternatives.  Dairy-free milk includes Rice, Almond, Soy, Oat and Coconut.  Most people can get used to—and even may prefer—these milk substitutes on their cereal and in cooking.  There are also a growing number of alternatives to other dairy foods.  For example, vegan cheese and soy-based ice cream are now available in many health food stores and supermarkets.

The one concern when implementing this diet is that you consume enough calcium, since milk is such a major source of this important mineral.  Alternative sources for calcium include almonds, parsley, corn, and pumpkin seeds.**

Treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Next week, we’ll examine the gluten-free, casein-free diet as it pertains to autism.  But autism isn’t the only health issue for which this diet is being recommended.  Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects up to 55 million Americans, mostly women. IBS symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal cramps.***  The gluten-free casein-free diet is being found effective by many people in treating and controlling this disease.  There is quite a bit of research to indicate that this elimination diet is helpful because “milk, wheat and eggs were most frequently identified to cause symptom exacerbation.”**

Whatever your reasons for implementing a gluten-free casein-free diet, Biotta Juices fit right in.  Want more information about Biotta juices?  If you’re a consumer and want to know where to find our juices, click on the beet juice icon on the right.  If you’re a retailer that already carries our juices, click the carrot juice icon to be included in our retailer directory.  If you have any other questions, just email us.
Energy drinks are hugely popular.  But there are so many of them on the market, how do you know you are getting a drink that not only boosts your energy but is healthy for you as well?

That’s a good question.  With sales in 2005 topping $3.5 billion in the US alone,* it’s important to choose an energy drink that not only increases alertness and performance, but one that is healthy, natural and refreshing.

Biotta’s healthy Energy Drink stands apart from the rest of the pack.  All organic, Biotta Energy Drink is made from six unique fruit juices and is slightly carbonated.  Unlike other energy drinks, Biotta Energy Drink is made from 100% juice, not flavored water.

Energy drinks have a stimulant effect on the body that generally comes from a combination of caffeine, sugar and herbal supplements.**  Even the caffeine in Biotta Energy Drink is different from most on the market.  The caffeine comes from the guarana bean, a natural form of caffeine that is 2-3 times as strong as the coffee bean.  In addition to a grape juice blend, Biotta Energy contains tea extract, Amazon juice blend (guava juice, camu-camu juice, acai juice, aronia juice), lime juice and guarana powder.

If you are looking for a healthy energy drink that combines powerful performance and the benefit of natural fruit juices, try Biotta’s Energy Drink, available in 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

Put a little spring in your step with Biotta’s healthy Energy Drink.  Want more information about Biotta pure organic juices?  If you’re a consumer and want to know where to find our juices, click on the beet juice icon on the right.  If you’re a retailer that already carries our juices, click the carrot juice icon to be included in our retailer directory.  If you have any other questions, just email us.

Biotta juices can now be seen in some of your favorite national magazines.  In the August 2009 issue of Shape magazine, Biotta’s Beet Juice was featured in their Shape Shops coverage.  In an article entitled “Sip Your Way Slim,” Shape notes “… new research found that dieters who downed one or two glasses of veggie juice a day lost more weight than those who didn’t.”

The magazine pictured our most popular seller—Biotta Beet Juice—but could just as easily have shown our Vegetable Juice Cocktail or any of a number of other juices that help Biotta customers get their daily recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals.  Shape magazine suggested drinking our juice “on its own or mixing this organic juice into a smoothie for an extra boost of folate.”

Since being featured on The View in April, Biotta Juices have begun to enjoy increased national awareness.  Want more information about Biotta’s natural organic juices?  If you’re a consumer and want to know where to find our juices, click on the beet juice icon on the right.  If you’re a retailer that already carries our juices, click the carrot juice icon to be included in our retailer directory.  If you have any other questions, just email us.

Drink Gluten-Free
Monday, August 17, 2009 by George Pappas
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley.  It can cause people serious health problems, including celiac disease and wheat allergies.*  Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten. Gluten is found mainly in foods but may also be found in everyday products such as medicines, vitamins, and lip balms.**

Gaining Popularity
People with allergies to gluten are not the only ones seeking a gluten-free diet.  In an article entitled “Gluten-free diets gaining in popularity,” which appeared in USA Today, author Kim Painter suggests that gluten-free products are on the rise in the general population as well.  Research, she says, shows that 15-25% of consumers want gluten-free foods, though doctors estimate only about one percent of the population has celiac disease.***

Actually, though only 110,000 Americans have been diagnosed with gluten intolerance, it is estimated that, if everyone who really has it was diagnosed, the number would be three million!  People who do not have gluten intolerance can have some sensitivity to gluten, causing symptoms that range from bloating to rashes.***

Even people with no symptoms are leaning towards gluten-free foods, such as fruits and vegetables, because they just feel better when they eat fewer processed foods.

Biotta Juices – Gluten-free
All Biotta vegetables and fruit juices—with the exception our Breakfast Juice—are completely gluten-free.  They are completely free of ingredients derived from gluten-containing cereals, as well as the use of gluten as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizing or thickening agent.

Biotta fruit and vegetable juices are 100% organic—grown organically and process in a closed manufacturing environment to retain and preserve valuable nutrients, vitamins and minerals.  You can’t buy a fresher juice—and, if you are watching your gluten intake, Biotta juices are a great way to get some of your recommended daily allotment of fruits and veggies.

Drink Juice. Speed Up Your Metabolism.
Friday, August 14, 2009 by Sara Cox
Have you ever seen someone and thought to yourself, “They must have a fast metabolism?”  If you’re not familiar with what metabolism does, it breaks down the carbohydrates, fats and proteins to make energy for your body.  But did you know that what you eat and drink can not only keep your body functioning well, it can also speed up your metabolism?

What Determines Your Metabolism Rate?
Metabolism is the amount of calories your body burns to keep itself going.  Three things determine how fast you metabolize what you eat and drink: how much you eat (amount of calories), how much you burn (exercise plays a part), and your genetic predisposition.  The body metabolizes food in a specific order: carbs first, then fats and lastly proteins.*

What Foods Speed Up Metabolism?
When it comes to foods that speed up metabolism, fruits and vegetables lead the list, followed by lean proteins, healthy fats and whole grains.*  That means, when you drink fruit and vegetable juices, your metabolism speeds up. Now that’s a good deal!
In an article entitled “Foods that Speed Metabolism,” we read:
“Vegetables are one of those … foods that we NEED to eat to maintain an elevated metabolism. Vegetables contain fibre, vitamins and many essential nutrients which we can't get anywhere else. Make sure to ingest 10-12 servings of fruits and vegetables daily (yes, that's more than the current food pyramid says).”**
Of course, when working to speed up your metabolism, you have to keep other things in mind, such as increasing your exercise, limiting overall caloric intake, drinking plenty of water, and getting enough sleep.  But, drinking fruit and vegetable juices can be an important element in the fight against a sluggish metabolism.

Biotta juices are delicious 100% natural juices.  Our organically grown fruits and vegetables are harvested for optimum quality, and then minimally processed to ensure great taste and high nutritional value.  Biotta produces USDA 100% organic juices, available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

When you can combine good and good for you, you’ve got a winner.  Biotta fruit juices fit that bill very well.  And recently, at the “Berry Health Benefits Symposium,” researchers from around the world gathered to report on health benefits of eating all kinds of berries.

Berries, it turns out, pack some powerful health benefits.  From inflammation and stress to the development of heart disease, cancer and chronic illnesses, berries are an important part of a healthy arsenal.  Britt Burton-Freeman, PhD, reported that high-fat meals trigger an inflammatory response in the body, and that berries can help block that response.*

Don’t Forget About Vegetables, Too
And the benefits are not derived solely from fruits.  Research also shows that people who eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables are healthier as they get older—that the compounds found in fruit and vegetable juices calm inflammation and reverse some signs of aging.

Berry Benefits

From cognitive memory to fighting infections, from reducing the risk of stomach ulcers to preventing urinary tract infections, the benefits of berry juices can hardly be overstated.*

That means Biotta Elderberry and Biotta Bilberry Juices are not only delicious, they are incredibly good for you.  Elderberries have twice the amount of antioxidants as blueberries and cranberries.  Elderberry juice also supplies vitamin C to assist in the prevention and treatment of colds; it’s been medically proven as a strong anti-viral and immune system enhancer.  Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is made from freshly gathered, sun-ripened organic elderberries.

Bilberries are highly praised in herbal books because they have a positive influence on the functioning of the blood vessels. Bilberries can also help relieve diarrhea.  Biotta Bilberry Juice is made from wild-grown, handpicked wood bilberries and contains an infusion extract of lemon balm that gives the juice a fresh, well-rounded flavor.

Biotta Elderberry juice is available in 8.4 fl. oz. and Biotta Bilberry Juice is available in 16.9 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.
